Let’s start off today’s post with a riddle: Why did the roofer go to the doctor? Because he had a bad case of shingles. (rim shot!)
Unfortunately for our client in Sloatsburg, New York, that would not be too funny at one time.
She contacted us because she was having trouble with her roof. As we drove up to her quaint home on a dream lot, we could tell something was off with this roof.
There were missing shingles and cracked shingles. The roof was not uniform, and rooflines met and sloped. We were interested to see what lay underneath the shingles.
During our consultation, the roofing repair issues we saw were confirmed. Not only had the roofing been applied improperly, but there were nails everywhere, shingles slapped on randomly, and no flashing in sight. This was a big problem beyond just missing or cracked shingles.
This didn’t seem to have been the work of roofing professionals. Flashing is one of the most basic and important things standing between you and thousands of dollars in water damage.
Cracked shingles and all, our client’s roof was allowing water into the roof cavity, where it sits and eats away at the wood. The roof cavity is the space between your external roof and the ceiling. It’s the spot where you put insulation, and you want to keep this area dry. No leaks allowed.
The pooling water was causing a leak to build up for quite a while, eventually rotting out the entire back section of the roof. This roof was in danger of a potential collapse if not addressed.
Not only can roof rot cause structural issues, it can also introduce mold into your home and attract critters. Imagine dealing with leaks, rodents, and mold. These are things no homeowner wants to mess with.
Clearly this wasn’t a “replace shingles and done” job, and with no time to lose. While all of this sounds staggering to a homeowner, it was just another day in the roofing world for us. Our project manager made sure to go over the new roof plan with the client to get this house in tip-top shape.
When doing a roof replacement, one of the most important steps is, well, to remove the old roof. Seems logical, right? However, sometimes we get asked about just adding new shingles over old shingles. This is will not work.
The old shingles, roofing nails, and flashing need to be removed so that the new shingles installation is done right and stays strong for years to come. Once the roof is removed, any weakened wood needs to be replaced, as do any nails missing from the roof deck. Then it’s time to replace shingles.
The new asphalt shingles would be carefully installed. Our client chose architectural GAF asphalt shingles, an affordable, durable, and energy-efficient line. Thesearchitectural shingles would finally give her home a fresh, sleek appearance.
Our high-quality products will protect against the elements and look fantastic for years. It was a huge improvement over the uneven, broken jumble we saw when we first got there.
And let’s not forget about flashing. Roof flashing is the metal material used to direct water away from vulnerable parts of the roof to keep water from pooling. Flashing is essential for preventing leaks.
Flashing usually surrounds vents, chimneys, and skylights. Since your roof’s number one function is to protect you and your home from the elements, it’s easy to see how all these different parts are essential.
We’re happy to report there were no technical issues or unknown challenges during this roof replacement. In fact, we were able to knock out this job in two days; it was incredible to see a roof that was in such bad shape transformed almost overnight.
Our client had roof concerns that were dismissed for a long time, but she was thrilled to have them finally validated. But more importantly, she was relieved to have a new roof she could trust.
When roof installation is improperly done, it is only a step from major issues.
The new asphalt shingles looked great, the roof turned out beautifully, and we were happy to help our Sloatsburg client find peace of mind.
