Today we are visiting Norwalk, Connecticut. Known as a quiet escape from the big city, you would be surprised at just how many attractions are featured in this Fairfield County town on north Long Island Sound.
Residents can spend their weekends at the Maritime Aquarium, visit historical landmarks, or take their kids to the Stepping Stones Museum for Children.
Our client featured in today’s blog post has a lovely house in this quaint part of southwestern Connecticut that was in need of some contractor work, specifically new roof shingles. After receiving our information from a friend, she gave us a call.
We came out to the house, did our usual thorough assessment, and discussed what the homeowner was trying to achieve with this remodel. It was decided that we would replace her main house roof as well as her garage roof and the old cedar fascia trim all around the house and gutters.
Quick note, if you’re wondering: The fascia is composed of boards, usually wood, that run between the edge and outside of a roof, acting as a vertical barrier of sorts. Fascia offers a barrier of protection against the elements to the roof and interior of your home and is also where gutters are typically attached. Fascia gives the roof a more complete finished look and also supports the shingles and helps keep moisture from getting under your roofline.
We started immediately, and while we were removing the original roof, we discovered that the original sheathing underneath was not only the wrong kind, but it was rapidly deteriorating. Not much protection left there.
We removed it and installed all-new plywood. As we’ve talked about many times in the past, a good house roof needs a good foundation. Such could be said for the majority of home features, but especially the exterior. They all need to have the necessary components, like a solid foundation, to work together.
This is why, when we were replacing the original fascia trim, we made sure to thoroughly address all the rotted-out areas. There were quite a few places with rot, and skipping any area would cause the fascia trim to rapidly destabilize. We made sure to properly frame out the sections in order to prevent future issues for this homeowner.
As for the style of roof, it was a tough choice. As a professional contractor, we work with the top industry leaders, which gives us an edge when giving our clients every option they can think of regardless of style or budget. Sometimes clients know exactly what they want, and sometimes they need some time or help to decide. Regardless of what they need for the remodel, we are here for them.
After much deliberation, the homeowner decided to go with GAF roof shingles in the color charcoal, one of the most popular roof shingles choices on the market. GAF asphalt shingles are our top choice for roof shingles, as they are budget-friendly, sturdy, and durable for the long haul while offering a solid warranty. There are many types of roof shingles to fit any project, but GAF asphalt shingles have been selected over and again by our clients.
One of the features that really stands out about this house’s exterior is the contrast against the trim. The trim is a crisp white, and paired with the charcoal, it really makes the whole house tie together in an incredibly balanced way (as you can see in the pictures). The new trim will never deteriorate at the rate that the previous cedar trim did, saving our client time as well as saving money in the long run. That’s making your budget count!
In the area we were about to place the trim (including around the gutters), we noticed quite a bit of rot. In order to secure the trim, we needed to remedy this. We were able to properly frame out the sections so that she would not have any issues in the future and that the new trim would hold well. We installed new PVC trim, which gave the house a much newer look because the PVC is very clean and white. This PVC trim also will never deteriorate as much as her old cedar trim did, restoring protection, a fresh exterior barrier from the weather.
We were very fortunate that during this project the weather was ideal. Despite all of the work that needed to be completed (like the frame out and garage roof), we were in and out in three days. The GAF shingles look great. It’s amazing what you can get done with solid leadership and a good team.
As always, we took extra care to ensure that we left the house and property better than we found it. We know our clients always appreciate the extra mile we go for them.
One of the things we always talk about here at Gunner is how much we appreciate our clients. Customer satisfaction is always our top priority. When you choose Gunner, we treat you like we would our family, which believes gives us an edge over your typical contractor.
The majority of our clients come from referrals; it’s the foundation of our business. And this case was no different. While we were working on the project, we had a neighbor stop by to chat. He couldn’t help but admire our work and was interested in getting a quote. The next week, he was on the books for a new house roof.
Between our new client and our current client absolutely loving her home with a new GAF asphalt shingle roof, I would say this project was definitely a success!
We can do the same for you, whether it’s advice on a certain style of roof, roof shingles, gutters, trim, siding, or windows. We’d also be happy to provide a free quote if you’re sizing up a budget.
