Now let’s take a ride out to Ridgefield, which sits at the base of the Berkshire Mountains and is about an hour north of New York City. The town has been around since 1708 (that’s not a typo … it really is more than 300 years old) and features many unique and beautiful homes.
Our client contacted us about a roof replacement. This wasn’t your standard “replace the whole roof” job, though. He previously had a partial roof replacement done over the garage, and now he wanted to update the rest of the roof.
It may surprise some that a partial roof replacement is not that uncommon. Often, the biggest challenge (and we ran into it here) is trying to color match the new shingles to the ones that will remain as to maintain a uniform appearance.
Most things – from furniture to clothing, paint to, yes, shingles – fade over time. Depending on times of year and typical weather climate, roof shingles will fade at different rates. Darker shingles will fade more quickly than the lighter shades. Even the position of the shingles on your home can affect the rate at which they fade; areas of your home more exposed to UV rays or other elements over the course of a day will fade more quickly.
Fortunately, we were able to essentially match the existing roofing using the GAF asphalt shingles selected for the project; the Pewter Gray scheme was a beautiful fit for this rustic home, as you can see in the photos accompanying this post.

The client was delighted with the result as well, so much so that he asked if we’d do another job immediately – install new intake ventilation for the attic.
Vents spaced over a certain percentage of square feet on your roof serve a couple of significant purposes: balancing the temperature in your attic and helping prevent ice dams on your roof when the wintertime cold weather rolls in.
These roof vents allow outside air in to reduce air moisture in the attic but also keep the space from becoming too hot. Uncontrolled, this heat will simmer under your shingles and can dry them out, which in turn can leave them brittle and susceptible to damage over time. Not good for long-term durability, whatever the type of roofing.
A cold winter roof can have issues, too – including ice dams. An ice dam forms when there is poor attic insulation and ventilation. The escaping heat melts the snow above the attic, and the resulting water finds its way down to an eave of the roof, collecting there and refreezing. That’s because the eave extends past the house and is unaffected by the heat in the attic.
The more this happens, the heavier the ice dam can become, and it can damage your shingles, seals, and gutters, even the inside of your home.

Since we had already finished the shingle part of the project, we had to cut away three feet from the roof line to install the vents. Still, the client’s decision to add them was a wise one, and it will pay off down the road and keep his brand-new roof in tip-top shape.
Speaking of the client, we didn’t mention that he was working overseas while we did the work. Gunner has always stressed how important it is that our customers be included in the project every step of the way. Communication is key.
In this case, our project manager, Anthony, had to make himself available 24/7 to accommodate our client’s schedule and the whopping 13-hour time difference. If the client wanted a virtual meeting at 2 a.m. our time, Anthony made it happen! Despite being clear across the globe, the client felt practically at home as Anthony made regular contact through emails, texts, calls, and video chats. That’s communication and attention to detail.
